Opinions on training, trainers, etc (for obedience)…?

So my mom is VERY knowledgable in obedience and trains people wanting to go into utility and so forth… well, she’s helping me, free of course (since she’s my mother) get my 5 month old coonhound trained-I want to eventually show him when he’s ready…
Our first lesson bothered me and I was wondering what you think-
She didn’t bring her own dog to demonstrate (which she does in her own class that she teaches), instead, she very readily would take my puppy and do the command to demonstrate, which she could have done with her own dog… the reason this bothered me was because my puppy focused on her more than me during the lesson due to her taking him and working with him predominantly…
Also, I don’t really agree with her methods… I personally prefer other ways of training and so overall I felt uneasy with the experience.

What do you think? First, I’m wondering what everyone thinks about an instructor being so pushy and taking your dog away from you… continued below…
and explaining the techniques to you, and if you do not grasp the concept, maybe they can demonstrate once with your dog should they not have their own with them, but overall to me, it seems an instructor should not do most of the training, you the handler should?

That was the MAIN thing I was so uneasy about…

Opinions from obedience people please! :) This is my first obedience dog-I’ve only ever done conformation, so this is square one for me.
lol, Nancy, people like you are amazing… you obviously draw from YOUR vast personal knowledge of me, because you espouse how much I do or don’t know… funny to me when people do that sort of thing.
I do have quite a lot of knowledge. I have been involved in training for years, just never in this fashion before. You should really think before you open your mouth because sometimes what comes out makes you look more foolish than helpful.
Like I said, she enjoys helping me, but that doesn’t mean I have to AGREE with her techniques.

I hope you know how to be more courteous to those you supposedly teach with your wellspring of knowledge…

Ignorance is bliss, aint it?

  • VW says:

Don’t be upset at the dog listening to the trainer better then it listen to you that why u have a trainer to show U how to train your dog most dogs always listen to trainer it is a more commanding voice and touch they have that the dog listens to take notes and follow what she is showing you. Not all trainers bring there own dog along to show you how to train your dog Have Patience and take notes.
