Dog Obedience Training Review

How can I teach my dog to heel when she goes for walks?

My golden retriever is almost three years old. We have had her since she was 8 weeks old. She has done very well with training, except for heeling. We’ve done obedience school, a choke chain collar, turning around walking the other way when she pulls…nothing really works. The only thing that makes her stop pulling is when she’s walked for long enough that she gets tired out. Any ideas?

Why is my dog so stupid?

My dog, sometimes is well dumb. It will sit out in the middle of a yard in a thunderstorm. I call it in, it comes about half way to the house, then turns around and goes back to where it was, I end up having to go out and get her. She knows how to go out a doggy door but she doesn’t "know" how to come back in one. There are times when I bring her in, where she will bite my hand and won’t let go until she is inside, yes she hangs on my hand until she is inside.

I have taken her to obedience school, trained her myself, but still, she acts so stupid sometimes. Why is this?

My mom wants to get a dog, the rest of us don’t think it’s a good idea?

Every dog we’ve ever had has run away, but now my mom wants another one. My dad doesn’t and they’ve really been at odds about this. I’m just worried that my dad won’t love the dog if it comes and my mom will only get angrier at him. Ordinarily, we all love dogs, but just can’t bear to have our hearts broken again. I don’t think getting a dog is a good idea. Is there any way I can reason with her. My mother is very bad on following through on commitments and lacks the patience to properly train a dog or take it to obedience school. Therefore the responsibility for feeding, exercising, disciplining, and picking up after the dog will likely fall on my dad, who already is very busy with work, since my mother won’t. She probably wants the dog because her children are all starting to grow up and leave her, but a dog is a 13-15 year commitment, and I don’t want to see anyone hurt, including my parents or an innocent dog.
My dad wanted the other dogs and my mom got sick of them. We think she gave at least one away secretly and told us it ran away

How do we rehabilitate an abused dog?

My aunt, who is not a dog person but thought she’d give it a try for the kids, bought a dog for Christmas from the pound. Having a dog was too much for her, so now we have it.

The dog must have been abused before it got to the pound. He flinches and cowers at anything…the tv turning on and off, standing up too fast, my other dog’s sneezes, the toilet flushing…seriously, everything makes this dog flinch.

How should we help him become a happy, more confident dog? How do we train him if he’s scared of everything (can’t take him to obedience school because there isn’t one near me)? Right now, I’m really only concerned with getting him to respond to his name, come, and sit.

He’s a four-year old, male (fixed) bassett hound/beagle mix.

How much do they cost?

Does anyone know how much Obedience classes are for a puppy? and also how much is it to put a GSD puppy into a Schutzen dog training school?

husband thinks our dog is bad, but I think he’s good… what are your thoughts??

Good:
1. listens VERY well… If I whistle to him he always comes to me. When outside without a leash and other dogs walk by, I tell him stay, and he doesn’t move, even with NO training or obedience school.
2. He has never bitten my kids even when they are being cruel to him.
3. Sleeps through the night quietly, and does not whine or howl.
4. Goes directly into his crate when we tap on the door and click our tongue.

Bad:
1. occasionally chews up my kids’ toys (maybe 1-2 toys a month)
2. Out of the blue will poop on our carpet for no apparent reason (this has only happened 2-3 times total)
3. Sometimes won’t go potty when anyone but me walks him
4. tears up the carpet if he is enclosed anywhere with carpet
5. has a weak stomach and will have diarrhea in hidden areas (like under bed) if he gets too much of the kids’ food (I don’t think this is his fault by they way).

I think he is a very good dog, but have trouble convincing my husband so.
The dog is 2 years old
He has his own toys
He is DEFINITELY a mommy’s dog… most of his bad behavior only occurs if I am not there.

When he chews the kids’ toys… I don’t know about it until I eventually come across the chewed toy… so I haven’t pinpointed any pattern. I believe it’s just confusion on his part because the kids will tease him with their toys… so he doesn’t know they aren’t his.

We have curbed most of the bad habits… I just wanted other opinions on how good/bad his behavior is to know if I was biased by a lot of bad dogs previously… or if he was biased by a lot of really really good dogs previously.

THANKS! ;;)

dog obedience? no skool?

i’m wondering how to maybe teach the dog more obedience for other people without having to go to a school.. i have taught her everything, but the problem is other people in the family let her get away with biting, jumpin, etc too often. she won’t do it to me so i can’t teach her it.. and she knows to avoid me if she does it to someone else.. how do i make her stop for other people? she’s getting fairly old now too.. 10 months.. lab/sheppard…. by the way for anyone.. side answer.. what is clicker training?? i’ve seen people say that and i don’t know wut they’re talkin about..

The Dogfatehr’s “The Perfect Dog” Training Video?

Hello all! I have a dog who is about to be 1 year old in two weeks. I’m not really sure of his breed as he is a rescue and his parents were not around when he was found.

I’ve had him about 10 months now and can’t seem to train him. I’ve tried several methods of training him (treats, praise…) but he’s still quite a handful, and it’s not just the puppy in him.

As it stands, he will occasionally sit on command (although he usually goes straight to the "down" position when I tell him to sit) and bites a LOT! He will sometimes get his entire mouth around my hand, arm, or ankle. When he does this, I try to grab his snout and close it (not too hard but tight enough so that he can’t open his mouth), make him look me in the eye, and tell him "NO BITE!" in a firm, low, calm voice. He usulaay goes right back to it though. I’ve tried making a whistling noise through my teeth when he bites and he doesn’t seem to hear this. I’ve tried yelping as a litter mate would when he plays too rough and he only looks at me for a second like "was that you?" and then goes right back to biting. I’ve also tried growling and barking like his mother would but he doesn’t seem to notice that either. With each of these cases, as soon as I have done something to let him know I’m not pleased with the biting (the growling or yelping), I’ve taken away attention from him and turned to something else but he just follows me. If I continue to ignore him, he bites harder until he gets some kind of attention. Now that he’s older and stronger, it’s really starting to hurt! I’ve also been using time out but that doesn’t seem to deter the biting on a regular basis.

I live about 50 miles away from the nearest dog trainer so obedience school is not really a possibility for me, so I was wondering if anyone knew anything about Don Sullivan’s "The Perfect Dog" training system (http://www.dogfather.tv/index.php). Does it work? Does it provide what I need to know in order to properly train my dog?

Thank you in advance for your help!

Also, here is a link to a picture of my dog in case looking at him helps to get a better idea of what I’m working with (as I have already said, I’m not really sure what breed he is, but some of you might be able to make and educated guess by looking at him!). http://i459.photobucket.com/albums/qq320/HerdMU/First%20Half%20Birthday/CIMG2704.jpg http://i459.photobucket.com/albums/qq320/HerdMU/Toby/IMG_0122.jpg
I know there is no "quick fix" but since the methods I’ve been using haven’t worked, I need some sort of help. I was thinking that training videos would help me understand how to better train my dog.

And to Anne - I also think he has at least some BC in him. When anyone leaves a room, he follows them and nudges thier feet until he gets them back where he wants them, haha!

What is the average cost of dog obedience schools and how do they work?

In a couple of months I will be buying a German Shepherd puppy for my family. Of course, I’ve done a lot of research on the breed before I made the decision and I can’t really find one negative thing about them other than they tend to be prone to hip dysplasia. I do have some knowledge on how to train dogs but I also want a little help from professionals for good measure. How much, on average, do dog obedience classes cost and how does the program usually work?

What’s a good method of training my dog to not sniff people’s crotches?

My Husky has a bad habit of getting a bit TOO personal with people who come visit, and even sometimes people living with him.

I understand that this is normal doggy behavior, but I’d like some advice on how to correct it.

We all bathe daily, so that’s not the problem :-p

Also, he’s really stubborn, and when he’s called he runs the other way, wanting to be chased. We’ve tried obedience school, but even the trainer had a hard time seeing as he doesn’t really care about food. Seriously, this is the only dog I’ve ever seen who will snub his nose to a dropped hamburger. So, as a part 2 of this question, does anyone know how to reinforce "come" without food.

He will come if I say "walk", but he won’t come for my mom when she says it because he knows she’s lying. But I don’t want to bring him for a walk every time I want him to come either!
He is fixed, but he was abused as a puppy so his behavioral problems started before we rescued him.
