Training other peoples’ dogs in basic obedience?
Here’s the deal.
I’m 15 years old. I’ve already trained 4 dogs in obedience, and one in highly competitive agility. One of the dogs I’ve trained belongs to my friend(Daschund), the other to my grandma(Standard Poodle). The other two belong to me. One is 11(hound mix), and the other is 3(Cav. King Charles Spaniel). My 3 year old is fairly competitive in agility and has placed every trial. He has his CGC and has passed his TDI test. He’s never NQed, and consistently outshines his classmates in our agility lessons. Basically, I’m not your average teenager.
This whole question stems out of the fact that I’m looking to add another dog to my ‘pack’, but I need the money to do so. This isn’t about breed choices(I’ve already picked a field bred ESS) or begging my parents to accept this dog, I already know where I’m going to college so that I can keep my dogs, so please, refrain from bringing it up.
An acquaintance of mine on a dog forum who is 14 teaches basic obedience classes in a park in the city she lives. She’s only privately trained one more dog than me, and since every one says that I have a way with dogs that not many other people do, I wondered if it would be worth it to try the same thing. Or at the very least, aid the dunces who teach the basic obedience classes at the local community center.
I wondered what others thought of the idea. It’d be a way of earning some extra cash by doing something I love(I can’t work at the boarding kennel where I take classes because I have to be 17 due to liability issues). And if anyone does think it is at least a plausible idea, how I should go about it(i.e. classes or one-on-one sessions) and what I should possibly charge.

To what extent can a rottweiler be trained to be social and not hostile?
I am considering buying a rottie, but I do not want a monster dog. I understand that rotties have an aggressive nature (correct me if I am wrong) and I am willing to take enough time to train it to be more friendly toward other people and animals.
So is it possible to achieve this goal and what tips can you give on this one?
Another question is, at what age can I send the dog to obedience lessons where other dogs will attend, so it would socialize, is about 7 months a good age to do that?
Also can a rottweiler live in an apartment. We have a very big yard, but after 4 years I am moving to another country and I will be in an apartment.
I see that many people misunderstood me.
First of all I am currently living in a giant yard for the next 4 years minimum. Also I am 100% committed to training a dog and spending time with it and socializing it, so this is no problem.
And before I forget, is it a very bad idea to get it when it is about 2 months old during winter if it is living in the yard outside. Temperature varies between -2 Celsius and 15 Celsius

Opinions on training, trainers, etc (for obedience)…?
So my mom is VERY knowledgable in obedience and trains people wanting to go into utility and so forth… well, she’s helping me, free of course (since she’s my mother) get my 5 month old coonhound trained-I want to eventually show him when he’s ready…
Our first lesson bothered me and I was wondering what you think-
She didn’t bring her own dog to demonstrate (which she does in her own class that she teaches), instead, she very readily would take my puppy and do the command to demonstrate, which she could have done with her own dog… the reason this bothered me was because my puppy focused on her more than me during the lesson due to her taking him and working with him predominantly…
Also, I don’t really agree with her methods… I personally prefer other ways of training and so overall I felt uneasy with the experience.
What do you think? First, I’m wondering what everyone thinks about an instructor being so pushy and taking your dog away from you… continued below…
and explaining the techniques to you, and if you do not grasp the concept, maybe they can demonstrate once with your dog should they not have their own with them, but overall to me, it seems an instructor should not do most of the training, you the handler should?
That was the MAIN thing I was so uneasy about…
Opinions from obedience people please! :) This is my first obedience dog-I’ve only ever done conformation, so this is square one for me.
lol, Nancy, people like you are amazing… you obviously draw from YOUR vast personal knowledge of me, because you espouse how much I do or don’t know… funny to me when people do that sort of thing.
I do have quite a lot of knowledge. I have been involved in training for years, just never in this fashion before. You should really think before you open your mouth because sometimes what comes out makes you look more foolish than helpful.
Like I said, she enjoys helping me, but that doesn’t mean I have to AGREE with her techniques.
I hope you know how to be more courteous to those you supposedly teach with your wellspring of knowledge…
Ignorance is bliss, aint it?

Dogs Dogs Dogs?
I have 2 dogs. One of them is a beagle. She is so hard to walk. It was fairly easy to teach my min pin, to not pull… and when he does, one tug and we are good. But her, man she pulls HARD, and I honestly have no idea how to change this, short of obedience lessons. Can anyone share how they have trained their dogs? Thank you

Are there any people in Kentucky training with remote collars?
I’d love to find some people in Louisville interested in training and competing in obedience trials or other dog sports using electronic collars specifically or anyone who wants to train their own dog and not fork over all the money for training classes or lessons. To form a group of friends to help each other train and provide support at obedience, agility , schutzhund, tracking trials! can email kycanine@yahoo.com to talk if wanted :)
NOT USED FOR THESE THINGS? Perhaps I should have mentioned that I have been training for a decade and have titled a dog I raised from a puppy to her CDX,BH, Sch1, WH, OB2, CGC. And took high in trial for teh sch1 and many first, seconds, thirds and a high in match at the akc events :)
Using an E-collar is not evil or cruel. My dogs are happy workers and I am merely looking for like minded people to meet at parks or parking lots to train in various locations and provide a cheering section at shows
If you care to learn more about incorporation of the remote collar in dogsports I suggest you check out www.sitmeanssit.com and www.nolimitations.com Also I have personally seen Tom Rose use e-collars on his malinois, literally hundreds of sch trainers use them including Joanne Plumb :)

Service Dog Training in Tri-State?
I am working with a local trainer that has been training/rehabilitating dogs for quite a long time. She is very good at what she does, and is both well liked and well respected in our community. I am also currently with her help owner training a service dog to help mitigate my disabilities. We are trying to determine if there is enough interest in the tri-state, specifically the Evansville, IN area to warrant starting classes for people that are owner training their service dogs. These classes would be both group settings as well as private lessons that would help with obedience through CGC, public access testing and certification, as well as task training. We would also have field trips to get the dogs socialized to different situations they will encounter in the "real" world. We might also eventually offer fully trained service dogs when the need arises. If you live near Evansville, do you see a need for this type of program locally? Thank you for your time.
